pumpd + f8 integration

hmmm...I've been reading the documentation about the new facebook platform, that thing is wicked. Facebook is going to take over the internet. It's going to turn into the central hub for life on the internet it seems. I can think of tons of applications that could be built for it. Basically take the idea for any Web 2.0 application and you could make it for f8. It's genius!

STEP 1 - Login to Facebook / read FAQ / About / ect
STEP 2 - Configure Challenge components (has sub-steps depending on event obviously. Parameters of challenge are determined by event type, so it'd be nice to have them make that choice first)
STEP 3 - GET PUMPD! (submit / create challenge - having this extra step helps in 2 ways. Allows for easier configuration of more complex challenges, and prevents the accidental challenge to the wrong person or the wrong event a little more likely. It's pretty easy to accidently challenge your little sister to pool at the bar for shots or something, having this extra step helps i think, lemme know what you think on this...what we could also do is have create QUICK PUMPD CHALLENGE, and create COMPLEX PUMPD CHALLENGE or something, and explain it more in the FAQ, i dunno)
STEP 4 - Talk shit / adjust challenge paramaters
STEP 5 - Compete
STEP 6 - Event closeout / stats or whatever
STEP 7 - Repeat

Let me know what you think of this flow. Damn, i just rhymed!
Also, it kept the ids of people who visited that previous event. So i guess we either need to purge the data or just not use that event again, increment anyway even if its been deleted.

just so you know, IE butchers the 'chatter' underneath events. IE6.0 at least. I'm not sure of the resolution on the computer im using it on (as Im at a training seminar all day on some small crappy computer) but ya, IE is throwing some fits. On this page as im writing it, IE says it doesnt support something on Line22 char 1 also.
Doesnt throw errors on the event page, just cuts off the right hand side of my comments because my facebook pic is a lot wider than yours. Dunno how to fix this besides set a max pic width size or something so it auto resizes down (while keeping aspect ratio) to stop it from cutting off. Dunno if it does this in firefox, i just noticed it now in IE and dont have FF available on this crap computer.

set up a system where a single facebook user can challenge another single facebook user to an event that is created on our end.
when a challenge goes out, a page (pumpd.org/*id*) will be created that will track the event
the main page will then reflect the simple challenges until the user logs in, at which time they are given the option to challenge friends to our events

so we'll need a table to track challenges, one to track events, and one to track users

I will probably just create filler graphics as I go along and we can redo them professionally if we find something that works. For instance, I think we will need a iconic graphic to represent every different challenge event. Like... if it's pool at the bar, we'll need a cool 'web 2.0' graphic for pool

-------------------------

more thoughts...
next weekend I'm going back to my college town and in this instance, I'd like to go play golf with my brother.
this is kind of what I thought pumpd would be used for...

I'd like to be able to challenge my brother to: a game golf... on a certain day (but not a specific time)... at a certain golf course (use google maps for the location?) ...and the loser has to buy beers at the buckhorn bar

When I create that challenge, pumpd should email both of us the info ... and any other friends we check as 'involved'
if any parties don't have a pumpd email address saved, they should be sent an automated(you still have to hit send) private facebook message alerting them to go to pumpd.org to see their challenge.

also, the user should probably be able to post some sort of link to the other user's wall ... sort of like... calling them out in public... then when anyone clicks through, we'll have spectators and chat (if enabled by challengers) ... and people can say what side they think is going to win ... or read that I wrote a note that 'everyone's invited to the buckhorn after I whoop him at golf!' sort of things...

that seems like a sort of fun little way to challenge people or just let someone know you wanna hang out...
...or even a playful way to get a date... I could challenge an ex to pool at the buckhorn bar friday night... whoop whoop

haha just ideas... what are your thoughts?

ok, i put in the google analytics code in the footer and it seems to be reporting nicely. I added you on there so you can see it, but you have to use a gmail account, so I set it up for your austin@pumpd.org account. However, you need to set up gmail for the domain before that will work (i think i sent you directions on how to do that in an email, maybe it was a blog post). Anyway, just so you know.

Colors + Header: I've been playing with the colors and stuff. I like it how theres the pumpd.org logo in the upper right, but I think the main logo needs to move up to be in-line with it, but I cannot seem to find where that header is or if I even have access to it in the layout section.

Actually there's a lot of stuff i dont really have access too, like the php stuff for footer...well i dont really care about the footer cause I think it looks good. But ya, I was going to edit the text for the Short about at the opening page but i couldnt get access to the custom php (separate php file on your server I assume). So maybe I'll whip something up for a short about and telling them to login and you'll have to play with it.

Oh, weird thing in IE (6.0 anyway...). In firefox the EDIT in the top right corner looks like the pumpd.org logo in the top left corner...well in IE 6 the EDIT just looks like text. So dunno whats going on there (stupid IE, unfortunately most people still use it for some reason).

Anywho, that was a short update.
STATS! The ability for team captains / people to record statistics of their games. So they won 23-20 in basketball 1v1 vs John or something. Then we can implement a ranking scheme later or something.
So stats would be a combo of 3 places.
Main page - rankings, latest stats or something
Stats page - full stats
Event page - where they would input the stats. Obviously for stats to count both parties must agree on the outcome or its not counted. Not sure what the best way to handle stats certification is tho...cause there's always going to be punks trying to beat it. I guess thats for the more indepth period of development tho.

I was reading an article about mobile domains and the like. What if, and im in no way saying from immediate launch, but what if we had a 'service' eventually that would let pumpd.org interact with cell phones...m.pumpd.org...i know facebook has a mobile component m.facebook.com. When you think about it most people want to know when their friend wants to go play some basketball/ect and where...and with the boom of mobile phones w/web we could interact 1 of 2 way or both...whichever. m.pumpd.org you could login to facebook and issues challenges...and or check when stuff is. Or you could have a text message sent to your friend with a challenge/info. Both of which are something to think about, but i dont really want to worry about that with the initial stuff...its just too complicated/too much to do already. But i'd be willing to bet that if pumpd.org takes off a lot of users will be using their cell phones instead of a computer. FYI: Facebook Mobile FAQ
Another thing that would be cool tho is to have champion trophies or something to the 1/2/3 place people/teams or something. We could probably create graphics for those really easily.

Diarrhea of the brain is the best way to get ideas! That way they aren't limited and we can go back and cross out the ones that we don't like.

I really like the idea of the 'foot in the door' and the functionality of the initial page / login type stuff. Also, I agree that we are going to need a pull down menu because of how many different activities we are going to have...along with the events/challenges that they have already participated in or signed up for.

There is a share feature in facebook and I know i've used it for photo's before. It would be nice to be able to integrate that share feature into our challenges so when they form a challenge they could share it with all participants or something. Also, extra stuff link is a definite yes.

I'm not quite sure on the naming thing yet. The EE/programmer in me wants to do the pumpd.org/123 to make it easy...but then again people want to name their events to promote them. I just think it will get too out of hand if we let them name all the events. Like basketballkillazUWMadison1v1round2 and so on. But maybe we could do pumpd.org/Wisconsin/basketball/1v1/123 or something so they know its basketball 1v1 at Wisconsin or something. I dunno...this is still up in the air i guess. I think as long as we let them name their teams whatever they want it will be fine to use simple naming conventions and numbers. Also, definitely list something so they can add it to their blog/profile or something to create more buzz about pumpd and reach more interest.

When making the challenge we should definitely have the option to turn off email notifications and or what they will be notified about. Every person who joins should have that ability to control what they want to see, not just the creator of the event...because what if the creator doesnt want any email, but most teammates want to be able to talk smack at the other team every time they make a comment. Ect.

I think i addressed everything, ill read it again and see.

functionality

 some loose functionality ideas:

first, list our events from our db as 'challenge facebook friend(s) to *our event*' ... or 'give an opinion (talksmack) about *our event* ... or get pumped for *our event* ... the advantage of this side is that it doesn't require a facebook log in until they have clicked a button ...foot-in-the-door salesmanship?

there should also be a button at the top that says 'challenge a facebook friend to a facebook event' this will require them to log in. Once they log in we can pretty much list their events as 'challenge friend(s) to *event*' buttons and then list their friends as 'challenge *friend* to *event*' buttons

I was thinking a pull down menu would be cool for each selection, but I would think friends and events would also need to be displayed with a facebook profile pic or event profile pic

once they make some sort of a challenge, we direct them to a predefined private message to the person they want to challenge or talk smack to that says something like:

You've been challenged to *event*, better get pumpd!
http://pumpd.org/event

once the other user clicks through we pick up his info too...

now we have both faces and we can post a full head-to-head challenge on our site...
[we can only store the two users' facebook ids so we have to query all the other info on each load]
(then allow a whole commenting/pumping up side that is our information to use freely in our own database ... we could show what users have logged in to the challenge and who has pumpd what side..)
...probably also link to the facebook event if it exists...
so pumpd.org/234 would be challenge 234... people could copy and paste that to their profiles, groups, walls, or walls

or even pumpd.org/thekeystoneclassic
should we shoot for giving events/challenges/editorials(smacktalkin?) an easy to promote identity?

oh now that I think of it there is a facebook share feature right...? people could create the challenge on pumpd and then there could be one of those (share +) buttons that just shares it to their feed/profile.... I think that might be the best way to do it...

(we could include extra stuff link the html to copy and paste to an external site or their personal blog)

diarrhea of the brain right now... feel free to edit any of this stuff(!!)

putting away ego and focusing on what is going to be the most successful is hard but necessary in this situation

should we get their email address to notify them of things like when their facebook friends come comment on the challenge or get pumpd for one side or the other (i think email should be an optional check when you make the challenge... we don't want to be spammy)

I dont know if we should really include the 'sponserd' sports for colleges, but it would be kinda fun to have on there so the players could add it to their profile. Also, I'm not sure how many sports are Co-Rec at the school level, but heres what i've got so far...

I was thinking kind of a multi-tiered approach of level / type of participants / competitive activity.

School(AvB) - Men's, Women's, Co-Rec
Club(AvB) - Men's, Women's, Co-Rec
Team(XvX) - Men's, Women's, Co-Rec
Individual(1v1, 1vAll) - Men's, Women's, Co-Rec

And then an activity under these. The list of activities for each level / participants could be defined, or we could just do a lump group of activities.

Here is a list of Club sports at UW-Madison:
Aikido EagleClaw Kung Fu Lacrosse-Women's Volleyball - Men's
Archery Fencing Racquetball Volleyball - Women's
Badminton Figure Skating Rugby - Men's Water Polo - Men's
Baseball Frisbee - Men's Rugby - Women's Water Polo - Women's
Budo Frisbee - Women's Running Water Ski &
Wakeboard Team
Capoeira Ice Hockey Shorin-Ryu Karate
Chinese Wu Shu Japanese Karate Tae Kwon Do Wrestling Club
Cycling Kendo Tennis Club
Dance Elite Lacrosse - Men's Triathlon

Most of these can be included at all levels...
But we could also include non 'supported' activites at the school/org level.

Other activites off the top of my head:
Beer pong, chess, rowing, soccer, tennis, track, i dunno, there are tons of ideas.
First, when i go into edit mode, it stretches the window way out to the right (im at work, so I have a minimal screen resolution.....ugh i wish they'd use macbook pros..heh). So whatever is doing that if you could find it thatd be great.
Second: Have you ever used google analytics before? http://www.google.com/analytics/ Its a great way to keep stats on your site, and all you have to do is enter these lines of code:

_uacct = 'UA-1405961-4';
urchinTracker();

That UA number is so it sends it to my google analytics so i can see the stats, if you sign up you can put both UA numbers in there. Each UA number is different per site. (well, the middle number i think is the customer number at google, the last number is the 1st, 2nd..ect site that you added to the list to watch.) Try it out, (you need a gmail account so if you still need one let me know, i wonder if you can use your austin@pumpd.org???)

Oh, you can also track different pages...like pumpd.org/blog or something

First: showed my g/f the logo.....she laughed at me...heh But she said she would try to whip something up for us in between her other jobs.
Second, as far as icon collections go, ive got some links bookmarked but haven't had the chance to go through them yet...as I think a logo is probably the most important thing right now. That, and it'd probably be a good idea to make a list of what icons/logo's we need/what format before we go searching for icons too in depth. That being said, here's a few sites with free icons.
http://openclipart.org/
http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/index.php?sort=date
http://www.everaldo.com/crystal.html

Third, i just noticed you have the favicon setup already...heh...nice. (obviously that'll get re-done along with the logo). But i'm liking the boxing gloves.

Legal Entity

Ok, time for the tricky legal craps. I know it doesn't really matter up front since we basically have all the stuff we need to work on the website for a long time before we get it setup and everything, but we need to whip up a document with our signatures and make copies of it for each of us, so we can split the costs / assets. We can do this a bunch of different ways, some require just a paper and a couple signatures, others require actual registeration with a state as a company (LLC, LLP, partnership...ect). Advantage of the registration with a state, is we could get advertisements payable to the company, and a company bank account....ect ect, downside is we'd have to pay for the LLC and file reports for it every year...while this isn't really impossible it is cumbersome when we're not really making a lot of money cause we'd probably do it ourselves. Once its profitable by a decent margin, the LLC/LLP is definitely the way to go IMO. But for now, id probably just suggest a joint venture agreement. Which is basically just a piece of paper with some terms on it for division of costs/assets and our signatures. Let me know which way to go and i'll look into it more. If you want to go with the joint venture agreement I'll get a draft going and email/upload it for you to look over and make suggestions (mostly ill just copy one off the internet and edit out stuff that doesnt pertain to us).
